Sock Sizing Explained: EU, UK and US
Any sock size guide is really a shoe size guide with a warning attached, because socks stretch and shoes do not. That is why the same foot can be a UK 9 in one brand and a UK 10 in another, and why the sock drawer still works. The problem only becomes real when you are buying for someone else, or buying a hundred pairs for a group, and you have no idea what is on their feet.
This guide sets out how EU, UK and US numbering line up, explains what Eddia's single size covers and who it genuinely does not fit, and gives you a way to buy for someone else without asking an obvious question.
What a sock size actually measures
A shoe size is a rough statement about the length of a last, which is the mould a shoe is built around. A sock size is a statement about the length of the knitted foot before it stretches. The two only line up because manufacturers agreed to pretend they do.
In practice a well-made sock covers a range of about four to five shoe sizes. The ribbing at the cuff and the elastic return in the yarn do the work. The number on the packet tells you the middle of that range, not a limit.
EU, UK and US conversions in one table
Conversions are approximate and differ a little between brands. Foot length is the honest measurement: stand on paper, mark heel and longest toe, measure the gap.
| EU | UK | US (men's) | Approximate foot length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 42 | 8 | 9 | 26.5 cm |
| 43 | 9 | 10 | 27.3 cm |
| 44 | 9.5 | 10.5 | 28.0 cm |
| 45 | 10.5 | 11.5 | 28.8 cm |
| 46 | 11 | 12 | 29.5 cm |
Two things trip people up. US women's numbering runs roughly one and a half sizes above US men's for the same foot, so a US women's 10.5 is close to a US men's 9. And EU numbering is a continuous scale, not a half-size system, which is why some EU-to-UK conversions land on a half and others do not.
Why Eddia socks are one size
Every style in the range is made in a single size: EU 42 to 46, which is UK 8 to 11 or US 9 to 12. That covers the bulk of adult men and a good part of adult women who wear larger sizes.
One size is a deliberate trade-off and worth naming honestly.
- What you gain: no size runs to guess at, no split orders, and nothing sitting in a warehouse in the wrong size. Because everything is made to order, a single size means production time is the only variable.
- What you lose: anyone below UK 8 or above UK 11 is outside the range. There is no small or extra-large option, and we would rather say that than sell you a pair that bunches at the heel.
How to work out someone's size without asking
Asking ruins a surprise, so use one of these instead.
- Look inside a shoe in their hallway. The size is printed on the tongue lining or the insole.
- Ask what trainers they buy. Trainer sizes are quoted more often than dress shoe sizes and are usually within half a size.
- Compare to your own feet if you have stood next to them barefoot. It is crude and it is usually right within one size.
- Skip it. If they are an adult man of average height, the odds that they fall inside UK 8 to 11 are good, and the range is wide enough to absorb a guess.
When one size is the wrong answer
It is worth being blunt here, because a gift that does not fit is worse than no gift.
If the person wears UK 6 or 7, the sock will be loose at the heel and the cuff will sit higher up the calf than intended. If they wear UK 12 or above, it will be tight across the instep and pull the embroidery out of shape. In both cases, buy something else. There are plenty of personalized gifts that do not depend on a measurement, and pretending a size range is wider than it is helps nobody.
Sizing for bulk and party orders
This is where one size stops being a compromise and starts being useful. If you are ordering for a wedding party, a team or a company, you normally need a size from every single person before you can place the order. That is the step that delays the order by a fortnight while three people ignore the group chat.
With a single size, the only information you need from each person is the text you want embroidered, which is the part they will actually reply about. Wholesale pricing starts at 100 pairs per design at $6.50 per pair against $10.00 retail, with no account or application to set up. The bulk custom socks guide covers how the 100-pair threshold works per design, and the wholesale and bulk range lists the quantities directly.
What sizing has to do with the embroidery
Fit affects how the personalization looks, which is the part most people do not think about. The embroidery sits on the outer cuff, and the cuff is the part of a sock under the most tension. On a foot near the top of the range the knit stretches more, so letters sit slightly wider apart. On a foot near the bottom they sit slightly closer.
Neither looks wrong, but it is one more argument for two or three characters rather than a long word. The explanation of how a pair of custom embroidered socks is made covers why stitching into the knit behaves differently from printing on top of it.
Frequently asked questions
What size are Eddia socks?
One size, EU 42 to 46. That is UK 8 to 11 or US 9 to 12 in men's numbering. Every style in the range uses the same size, including the monogram dress sock, the name-embroidered dress sock and the ruffle-cuff style, so you never need to pick a size at checkout.
Is EU 42 to 46 the same as UK 8 to 11?
Close enough to buy on. EU 42 sits around a UK 8 and EU 46 around a UK 11, with the half sizes in between falling where each brand decides they fall. If you know someone's US men's size instead, the equivalent range is 9 to 12. Conversions between systems are always approximate.
Do bamboo socks shrink in the wash?
Not noticeably if you wash them cool and keep them out of a tumble dryer. Heat is what shrinks a knitted sock, not water. A 30 degree wash and drying flat or on a line will hold the size. The guide to washing embroidered socks covers the detail.
What if the recipient wears a UK 12?
Then this is not the right gift for them. A UK 12 foot will stretch the sock past what it is knitted for, the cuff will sit lower and the embroidery will pull. We would rather tell you that now than have you find out after the wedding. Choose a gift that does not depend on a fit.
Do socks need to match shoe size exactly?
No, and that is the point of a stretch knit. A sock that is one size either way of a foot fits fine; two sizes out starts to show at the heel, which is where a badly sized sock gives itself away. The heel pocket should sit on the heel, not under the ankle bone.
Can women wear this size?
Yes, if they wear around a UK 8 or above. The range starts at EU 42, so for most women the sock will be too big, and the ruffle-cuff style is no different in size from the rest of the range. It is an honest limitation rather than a unisex claim.
If the size fits, what to order next
If the person you are buying for lands inside UK 8 to 11, the size question is settled and the only decision left is the text and the color.
Twenty colors are on the custom name embroidered dress socks, and six on the personalized monogram wedding socks if initials suit the recipient better. A cuffed alternative, the embroidered ruffle socks with custom text, is knitted to the same EU 42 to 46 fit. The full sock range shows every color in one place, and the comparison of bamboo and cotton socks explains what the yarn is doing underneath all of this.
